The PCM (full form: Protection Circuit Module) or PCB(Full form: Protection Circuit Board) is the “heart” of the Li-ion battery pack. It will protect the Lithium battery from overcharging, overdischarging and short circuits etc., avoiding explosion, fire and damage to the battery pack.
For low voltage packs (<20 cells), a balanced PCM should be selected to maintain the balance and good life of each cell. For high voltage Li-ion battery packs (>20 cells), an advanced BMS (Battery Management System) should be considered to monitor the performance of each cell to ensure safer battery operation.
PCM vs BMS
PCM/PCB cannot communicate with a charging units or a consuming motors. BMS contains a communication bus (Bluetooth, RS485, UART CAN, …), therefore it can lead chargers or consuming motors, to optimize the utilization of the batteries and the whole the system.
BMS is like PCM, but it offers more features to monitor the battery’s health. It contains a microcontroller with integrated intelligent software that allows it to calculate and interpret different battery measurements like State of Charge and State of Health, etc.
